Residents in Oceanside and Nassau County officials are calling for the resignation of an Oceanside sanitation commissioner.
County officials say commissioner Ryan Hemsley shared dozens of inappropriate Facebook posts that are racist, sexist and hurtful.
State Sen. Todd Kaminsky says he received a letter from an anonymous resident last month, which included dozens of the Facebook posts.
"There at least over 30 posts. Islamophobic, homophobic, racist, just some of the worst things you could see," says Kaminsky.
The sanitation board, area residents, Kaminsky and Nassau Executive Laura Curran have joined the growing calls for Hemsley to step down.
"It's heart-wrenching, it really is. Especially as a disabled adult, Oceanside has been an amazing community for people with disabilities," says Jonathan Brooks. "One of the things he posted that hit home was he made a meme out of children with autism drowning in a pool."
The sanitation board chairman says the board does not have the power to remove another commissioner, but Kaminsky says another route is for a resident to go to court and try to prove the commissioner has committed wrongdoing.
A lawyer for the board says they're just starting an investigation into the Facebook posts.
"We've asked Facebook for the underlying information so we can determine whether the posts are authentic, and they are his. No. 2, we've contacted the attorney general," says lawyer John Ciampoli.
Hemsley previously told News 12 some of the posts are his and some are not. To this point, Hemsley has refused to resign.
