Hundreds packed the Masjid Darul Quran mosque in Bay Shore Friday to pray and reflect on the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
Long Island?s Pakistani community is in mourning as Bhutto was laid to rest in Pakistan. Three days of mourning have been called by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf.
Some worshippers at the Bay Shore mosque called for an end to violence in the name of Islam and for a continuation of Bhutto?s work. They say they are hopeful that Bhutto?s dream of a democratic Pakistan will be realized.
Dr. Hassan Muhammad, Bhutto?s emissary in the United States, told News 12 Long Island that her death will be a unifying factor to combat extremism and embrace democracy.
Pakistan?s government says al-Qaida was behind Bhutto?s assassination. Pakistani officials say Bhutto was not killed by gunshots or shrapnel, but rather when her head slammed against a lever in the car?s sunroof following the suicide bomb blast.
