The first baby to be born on Long Island in 2016 arrived just at the stroke of midnight.

Daniella Malakov gave birth to a 7 pound, 4 ounce boy at Northwell Health, formerly known as North Shore-LIJ, in New Hyde Park.

The hospital saw four babies born shortly after midnight, but many who work at the hospital say the Malakov baby is special. He was the first to be born on Long Island in the new year, and it's possible that he was the first 2016 baby to be born in the entire country.

Doctors say a graph monitoring contractions stops exactly at midnight, marking the baby's time of birth.

Northwell Health nurse Patricia Garafalo says such midnight births are so rare that she's never seen one in her 28-year career. "If I was a betting person, I would say he is the absolute first baby," she said.

The boy's parents are now getting some rest, and getting ready to introduce their new son to his 2-year-old sister.

Stony Brook University Hospital says its first baby of 2016 was born at 12:02 a.m., and doctors at Good Samaritan Hospital delivered a baby at 12:38 a.m.
