The Long Island Railroad is expanding the use of Positive Train Control to all trains.

PTC is an electronic crash prevention system that automatically slows down or stops a train that goes too fast or violates a signal.

The system is now in use on some cars on four more branches — Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Oyster Bay and West Hempstead. It was already in use on the Port Washington branch, a portion of the Montauk line and the Hempstead branch.

LIRR President Phil Eng says riders should think of PTC as an extra layer that brings the trains to a stop if necessary.

“People should not be worried about this taking away the human element, because it's supplementing the human element. It's minimizing any potential for where perhaps something is missed,” he says.

The expansion of the PTC system on all trains has been mandated by the federal government, and the LIRR has until next year to finish the expansion.

As News 12 has reported, there have been several delays in the project, but Eng says the deadline will be met. He says, by the end of the year, he expects the expansion to be at about 45% completion.
