A 12-year-old boy was struck and killed by a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train headed to Huntington during Friday's evening rush hour, officials said. New York City police say the accident occurred around 5:40 p.m. The 5:17 p.m. train, which was due to reach Huntington at 6:21 p.m., was held at the scene of the accident. Service was suspended in both directions between Penn Station and Jamaica, Queens as the investigation continued. The LIRR restored eastbound service out of Penn Station with train delays of up to two hours around 7:40 p.m., and full service was restored at approximately 9 p.m. New York City Transit honored LIRR tickets to help ease the flow. However, the suspension created a nightmare for commuters trying to get home. The boy's name is being withheld until his family was notified. Another boy, who was with the victim, called 911. The two kids were allegedly spray painting graffiti at the time of the accident.
