Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) head James Dermody is offering an apology to the hundreds of commuters stranded after a winter storm caused service disruptions Sunday and Monday.
Dermody made his apology before members of the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) at a board meeting in Manhattan. Dermody assured board members he is conducting a full investigation into the snow delays, what caused them and how they can be avoided in the future. He also announced that 93.4 percent of all trains arrived on time in January and rider numbers are up 1.2 percent.
Many commuters said they appreciated the apology, but were more concerned with the lack of notification of delays than the delays themselves. Gerry Bringmann, of the LIRR Commuters Council, described the commute Monday as "a complete and utter joke."
