The Long Island Rail Road announced a new plan Wednesday that it says will close more dangerous gaps.
LIRR President Helena Williams says the plan will help reduce gaps an average of 3 inches at station platforms. The plan includes installing threshold plates on each car door that would close 2 inches. In addition, the plan proposes attaching an edge board to the side of each platform that would close another inch.
Williams says part of the plan is specific to the Syosset train station, where there is a 13-inch gap. That part of the proposed plan includes extending the platform approximately 600 feet in an easterly direction, so that trains ride on a straighter track.
Many LIRR riders say the new plan is a step in the right direction for passenger safety.
