The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) is essentially back on track following Monday's East River tunnel derailment.
Crews worked through the night to finish repairs to 500 feet of damaged track caused by the derailment. Officials say a 10-car train from Penn Station bound for Hempstead derailed at around 6 p.m. Monday as it entered an East River tunnel.
About 800 riders were temporarily trapped onboard, but no injuries were reported.
The LIRR canceled 21 trains on Tuesday evening.
