Sources tell News 12 Long Island that the Long Island Power Authority is looking to increase monthly bills to help deal with rising oil and natural gas prices.
LIPA CEO Kevin Law will soon announce another hike in the power supply charge for 1 million customers, sources say. The power authority already hiked the charge 2 percent in January, and sources add the latest hike could be as much as 6 percent, amounting to an extra $9 a month on the average $150 monthly bill.
As gas prices continue to rise, LIPA is seeking to wean itself off fossil fuels in an attempt to start using renewable, more natural resources. The public is being invited to comment on LIPA?s new directive in the form of hearings.
LIPA is putting together a draft of their energy plan and public hearings will be held early in the fall.
