Long Island Power Authority Chairman Kevin Law is pulling his support for a planned windmill farm off the south shore, he announced on News 12 Long Island's "Long Island Talks" Wednesday.
Law said the $700 million price tag, which would have been passed onto LIPA's ratepayers, was too expensive for the amount of electricity that it would have generated.
"I am not going to support the wind farm project here off the shores of Robert Moses and Jones Beach," he said. "It is just not economically viable and Long Islanders are screaming we have an affordability crisis here."
Pulling the plug on the project, which could occur when Law makes his recommendations at the next LIPA board meeting on Sept. 25, does not mean the chairman is against wind power in the future.
"I'm committed to working with environment organizations to see where we can do a wind project that makes sense," he said.
Environmentalist Bob DiBenedetto, of WindWorks, expressed optimism despite Law's announcement.
"The question is, 'Can we bring it to Long Island in a way that's economically feasible?' We say 'Yes,'" DiBenedetto said. "And the fact that one project was too expensive doesn't shed a bad light on wind at all."
