Lindenhurst High School students return from trip to Italy with flu-like symptoms

School district officials say the students are showing symptoms that indicate the flu, norovirus or possibly salmonella.

A group of students from Lindenhurst High School are sick after they traveled to Italy during the winter break.
School district officials say the students are showing symptoms that indicate the flu, norovirus or possibly salmonella.

The trip included stops in Rome, Venice and Florence, which are not on the list of towns in Italy currently under quarantine due to the coronavirus surge in the country.
In a letter posted on the district website, Superintendent Daniel Giordano says nurses have been in touch with county health officials, and that that agency "have expressed confidence that the gastric symptoms being displayed by our students are more aligned with a diagnosis of norovirus, flu or possibly even salmonella and are in no way reflective of the respiratory symptoms or symptoms of pneumonia which accompany the coronavirus."
It's not yet clear how many students are sick. News 12 has reached out to Lindenhurst schools for comment.
