While labeling underage drinking a consistent problem, Long Beach educators introduced the workings of a plan Wednesday designed to keep the trend under control.
Long Beach School District officials confirm they are exploring the possibility of using Breathalyzer tests at school functions, such as the prom. At least four other Long Island school districts utilize the alcohol detection system in some capacity. The superintendent says the school board wants to be proactive about protecting the district's kids, adding other programs and policies around the country will be examined before Long Beach's plan is finalized.
Some students believe it is unfair to treat all students as suspects when only some are engaging in the crime. Others say they don't have a problem with the proposal.
A public debate is scheduled for the January 9 school board meeting.
