Thunder, lightning, wind and rain proved a dangerous combination across Long Island Thursday evening.
Trees struck by lightning or strong-armed by wind fell over in several areas. Stewart Avenue, a main road in Salisbury, had three of its four lanes blocked by two trees. A Good Samaritan stood outside directing traffic to prevent accidents.
Jessica Ficke, of Hicksville, survived a close call. Ficke said she and her mother were sitting in their car on Abbott Lane when the trunk of a tree came crashing down.
"I didn't realize it at first," she said. "My mom did and she was screaming."
Ficke said she and her mom weren't hurt.
While some encountered trouble on the roads, others at their homes were left hoping the Long Island Power Authority would turn on the lights. At its peak, LIPA reported 6,000 customers without power in Nassau and more than 1,000 in Suffolk. For up-to-the-minute information on power outages, call the LIPA Outage Hotline at 1-800-490-0075.
