Jose Campos went to work at Roman Stone in Bay Shore Monday, like he has many times in his 15 years working there -- then lightning struck him in the yard.
Strikingly, the 48-year-old married father of two from Central Islip survived.
From his bed at Southside Hospital and through an interpreter, he told reporters Tuesday that he had just gotten out of his forklift to move a box when the lightning boomed into the ground about 20 feet away from him.
The electricity traveled along the ground and knocked him out.
He said it left him paralyzed and blind for almost 20 minutes. After that, he said he was able to crawl and get help.
"When I got up, I could still feel it in my feet," he said through the interpreter. "I was shaking from head to toe."
That's the extent of what he can remember.
Doctors say he's lucky to be alive. He has no major injuries but is in a lot of pain.
His bosses at Roman Stone say they hope he recovers enough to return to work.
