Lifeguards were watchful for swimmers' safety from rip currents as Long Islanders flocked to the beaches Saturday to kick off their long Labor Day weekend.
Green flags were up at Jones Beach, which meant there were no swimming restrictions. Lifeguards, however, reminded beachgoers to put safety first because a moderate rip current risk was in effect for beaches along the South Shore.
Lifeguards also reminded beachgoers to always obey their instructions and only swim where there is a lifeguard present.
They said weak swimmers should stay in shallow water and for those with more experience to swim in pairs.
They also encourage parents to keep a watchful eye on their children.
