The Senate followed the House's lead Thursday in passing an Iraq funding bill that would start bringing troops home, but Long Islanders have mixed feelings about the bill's effects.
The bill would provide $124 billion in funding for the war, but orders President Bush to begin withdrawing troops from Iraq by October 1. Democrats contend the time is right to start bringing Americans home and that this was change Americans voted for in November.
The passing of the bill now paves the way for a veto showdown with President Bush.
President Bush has repeatedly vowed to veto any funding bill that has strings attached. He says the bill is a political statement and does not listen to the advice of those on the ground in Iraq. Bush has also said that the war on terror is not over yet.
The town of Brentwood has suffered its fair share of pain during the war, losing four soldiers. Some say the time has come to start bringing the troops home. But, others say if the United States leaves Iraq there will be no one else to help solve the country's problems.
