The federal corruption arrests of County Executive Ed Mangano, his wife Linda and Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto sent shockwaves throughout the Nassau County Thursday.
Mangano was born and raised in Bethpage and is now raising his family there. Neighbors in his hometown who spoke with News 12 Long Island seemed more willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.
"He didn't do anything worse or better than anyone else. He's a human being. He gave a lot of his life and time to help us in Bethpage," said Mary Camerlengo.
Others said politicians abusing their power is becoming too common.
"It's amazing. You elect them and you think they're going to be honest. They take oaths," said John Michalic.
Mangano is charged with extortion, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, according to a 13-count indictment unsealed by federal officials. He maintained his innocence after his arraignment.
