Wednesday was getaway day for Long Islanders traveling to their Fourth of July weekend destinations.

According to AAA, about 40 million Americans are expected to travel over the holiday weekend. The good news is gas prices are the lowest they've been in five months.

On Long Island, officials say motorists can expect to pay an average of about $3.59 a gallon for regular gas.

As for the LIRR, trains to the Hamptons and Montauk began today and will run to the East End through the weekend.
