Long Islanders gathered at Republic Airport in Farmingdale Thursday to take a final look at the U.S. Navy?s F-14 Tomcat.
The Navy plans to retire the fighter plane in September. The F-14 Tomcat is the last fighter plane built by the old Grumman Corp. on Long Island. Many are calling the retirement of the F-14 the end of an era.
Those who flew the fighter jet say it is a well-designed, well-made plane that they felt safe in. The F-14 was featured in the 1986 movie "Top Gun," starring Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis.
