Towns across Long Island are cleaning up downed trees and power lines in the aftermath of overnight storms.
The Long Island Power Authority reports 51,000 customers were without power at the peak of the problem. Some East Patchogue residents say the winds were so strong it felt like a tornado passed through. One resident had a tree fall on his house, but says luckily no one was hurt.
Pat Maloit, of the National Weather Service, says recent storms have been unusually potent partly due to excess moisture in the air. He says the storms get an extra kick because the jet stream is a little further south than normal.
