Water temperatures are in the mid-70s on Long Island, with generally fair water quality. Out of 30 sites tested, 12 are ranked fair with 6 good and 11 poor.
Water quality is good from Mount Sinai to Mattituck and Peconic Estuary. It's also good on the South Shore from Fire Island Inlet to Shinnecock Inlet.
In contrast, poor conditions continue from Cold Spring Harbor and Hempstead Harbor, with dense harmful algal blooms that caused low water clarity and low levels of dissolved oxygen at night, as well as elevated levels of fecal bacteria.
The water is also poor from the Great South Bay to Moriches and Shinnecock Bay with a dense bloom of harmful alga, low water clarity, and oxygen levels near zero at night.
Fair to poor conditions can be found across some harbors and tributaries on the east end including Meetinghouse Creek, Peconic River, and Sag Harbor with lower oxygen and water clarity and elevated levels of algae.
As always, check with your county health departments and NYSDEC for more information on swimming and shell fishing.
