It is a bittersweet Veterans Day for some Long Islanders whose decadelong project to honor Vietnam veterans has come to an end.

During the Vietnam War, a helicopter transported troops, carried supplies and rescued wounded U.S. soldiers, but the most recent mission was different.

It was the last time this particular Sigorsky UH-34 would ever take off from the East End of Long Island, the place that's been its home for the past 12 years.

A group of Long Island veterans restored the chopper and have been flying it to air shows around the country.

However, its final destination was 300 miles away in Quantico, Va., where the chopper will be donated to the National Museum of the Marine Corps.
