As Americans prepare to celebrate Independence Day, police on Long Island and across the nation are on high alert for possible terror attacks.
There will be millions of Americans traveling or vacationing in the outdoors this weekend, and police say that these gatherings could be viewed as soft targets for extremists.
Nassau County police spokesman Kenneth Lack says no specific threat exists for Long Island, but officers will be ready.
"We have extra uniform patrols, our SWAT team, our Bureau of Special Operations will be in their uniform out at major events - you will see them, they'll be very visible," he says.
Police say a heavy security presence will be at Jones Beach for the July Fourth fireworks, but they say no matter where you are, if you see something, say something.
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone says Suffolk police are also in a heightened state of readiness for the Fourth of July holiday.
