Long Islanders in 124 school districts headed to the polls today with school budgets and taxes on the line.

A total of five Long Island districts wanted voters to approve budgets that pierce the property tax cap. Those districts included Bridgehampton, the district with the largest proposed increase of 8.7 percent. Bridgehampton's budget failed to pass.

The other districts that wanted to pierce the tax cap were East Hampton, Patchogue-Medford, Sayville and West Babylon. Patchogue-Medford and East Hampton's budgets were approved. West Babylon and Sayville's budgets failed.

Officials say taxpayers were looking at the lowest proposed increases in 40 years.
