The snow may have tapered off Saturday, but the deep freeze remained across Long Island.
Most major roadways were clear of snow thanks to the work of salt spreaders and snow plows. The Islip town supervisor says schools being closed for the holidays helped their effort to clear 1,200 miles of road in the town.
Firefighters say doing their jobs is much harder during brutally cold conditions. Chief Jason Bernfeld, of the Melville Fire Department, says volunteers have to deal with falls and frostbite while using water to put out fires.
Temperatures are not due to be to above freezing until late next week.
Warming centers in both Nassau and Suffolk will remain open during the bitter cold conditions.
