Two Long Island parents were arraigned Tuesday on DWI charges under Leandra's Law in separate incidents.
A Ronkonkoma woman was arrested Monday for allegedly driving drunk with her 8-year-old son in the car. Police say Veronica Valentine was driving eastbound on Express Drive South in Ronkonkoma when she swerved to avoid hitting a dog. Her vehicle went off the road and hit a fence and tree on the north side of the street. Officials say no one was hurt.
Police say Stanley Battle, of Commack, crashed into a hot dog truck while high on drugs with his 19-month-old daughter in the car. Authorities say he hit the truck on the shoulder of Sunrise Highway in North Bellport Monday afternoon. There were no injuries.
According to the U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 40 percent of traffic-related deaths between Christmas and New Year's Day involve drunken drivers.
AAA says there will be more than 100 million Americans traveling in that timeframe.
