State lawmakers have passed more legislation to beef up Megan?s Law and inform parents if a convicted sexual predator is living nearby.
Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean Skelos (R-Rockville Centre) says this year has been a banner year for sex offender legislation. The new law will add the mug shots of more than 8,500 level 2 sex offenders to the state Web site. Currently, only high-risk level 3 offenders are listed. Cops have also been given the green light to inform neighbors about level 1 sex offenders living near them. The bill also ends the statute of limitations on rape and other sex crime felonies.
State lawmakers have also passed "Jessica's Law," which toughens the penalty for violent sexual predators. Laura Ahearn, of Parents for Megan?s Law, says sex offenders who target children in New York could now spend the rest of their lives in prison.
