Many Long Islanders were forced to brave the bitter-cold weather Friday because they work outdoors.
Construction workers started their day at 6 a.m. on Jerusalem Avenue in Hempstead, braving the frigid temperatures as they installed sewer pipes. The men say they're used to working in extreme weather, but that it's not easy.
Site supervisor Chris Lacagnina says his crew dresses in layers and takes several breaks throughout the day to warm up. They also look out for signs that may indicate a problem, including slurred speech.
Doctors say it's important for people with pre-existing medical conditions to bundle up with gloves and hoods because the cold weather can be even more dangerous for them.
Dr. Edward Mintz, of Winthrop University Hospital, says the two biggest concerns in the frigid temperatures are hypothermia, which is abnormally low body temperature, and frostbite.
He says it's especially important to check in on the elderly, children and pets to make sure they're prepared and staying as warm as possible in the frigid weather.
