As the coldest night of the winter so far approaches, the law is on the side of Long Island residents trying to keep warm.
When temperatures dip below 55 degrees Fahrenheit, landlords are legally obligated to maintain certain heat levels. During the day, landlords must keep temperatures at or above 65 degrees. Sixty-eight degrees is required at night.
Anyone with a landlord that does not comply with the heating law can contact the Nassau County Department of Health at 516-571-3678 or the Suffolk County Department of Health at 631-852-5200 or 631-852-5841.
