Glen Cove Hospital is gearing up to become a temporary specialized treatment center for Ebola patients.
North Shore-LIJ officials say the facility will be used to treat Nassau residents if they contract the virus.
The unit will be able to provide around-the-clock treatment to patients. It'll be located on the third floor of Glen Cove Hospital in a separate, discreet area of the hospital equipped with a lab and a separate entrance and exit.
Hospital officials say the Ebola treatment center will not disrupt other services at the hospital.
North Shore-LIJ is recruiting a volunteer team of critical care experts to provide care for potential Ebola patients. Hospital officials say the center will not pose any health risk to Glen Cove residents.
North Shore-LIJ is also planning to build a permanent biological containment unit to treat other infectious disease outbreaks in the future. The site for the permanent center, which could take 18 months or longer to build, has not yet been determined.
