The state attorney general announced a settlement with almost two dozen auto dealerships across Long Island.
According to Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, 22 dealerships, all affiliated with Atlantic Automotive Group, "defrauded consumers with misleading promotions and fraudulent sales tactics."
They will have to pay $310,000 in damages.
Atlantic Automotive Group released a statement that says in part, "The complaints received by the attorney general primarily related to a direct mail campaign produced by an outside company with whom we have not done business for nearly two years. The group worked closely with the attorney general during this investigation."
Consumer advocates say the best way to protect yourself is to get agreements in writing, read those agreements carefully and leave if you ever feel pressured.
