(AP) - An early morning fire in northern NewYork killed an 18-year-old college student from Long Island andleft another man in critical condition. Police in Plattsburgh say the apartment building blaze wasreported just before 3 a.m. Sunday. After evacuating more than a dozen residents, emergency crewsfound two men unconscious inside. Both were taken to Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital, whereSteven Fanning was pronounced dead. He was a SUNY Plattsburghfreshman from Kings Park. The other man, 22-year-old Matt Ames ofTroy, was reported in critical condition Monday morning. Neither was a resident of the building, which is occupied mainlyby college students. Authorities do not believe Ames was a student. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
