A push is being made for a bridge spanning the Long Island Sound to Connecticut, and it could be a boon for some local businesses.
With spring right around the corner, the landscaping industry will be back in business, including Bissett Nursery, a wholesaler in Holtsville. It ships not only across Long Island, but also out of state. The business says a bridge or tunnel across the Sound would be an enormous help, especially when it comes to getting its trucks through traffic in and around New York City.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo is proposing a $5 million study on the feasibility of a tunnel under the Sound to either the Bronx, Westchester County or Connecticut. The study would include how much the project would cost and who would pay for it.
The Long Island Association, the Island's largest business group, also wants that study to include looking into the possibility of a bridge over the Sound.
The idea of a bridge over the Sound has been around for decades. Back in the 1970s, one proposal would have seen the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway extend to Oyster Bay and then onto a bridge. Community opposition ended the project and the roadway remains a dead-end in Syosset.
