A report released Wednesday by two environmental groups rates Zach's Bay off Jones Beach as having some of the dirtiest water in New York State.
The Natural Resources Defense Council and the Citizens Campaign for the Environment say high bacteria levels are from too much storm water runoff.
Last year, Long Island beaches were closed for a combined 808 days because of poor water quality. Many of those closures were in the Town of Babylon.
The town says it?s tackling the beach closure problem. At Tanner Park Beach in Copiague, officials installed a barrier to keep seaweed out. They say they?re also using other techniques to protect the water.
