Teachers got a lesson in Jericho today on how to be more inclusive of LGBT students.
This is the fourth year the Jericho schools have hosted the LGBTeach Forum. The program is aimed at teaching acceptance of all sexual orientations. More than 250 teachers from districts across the state attended the forum.
"There are a lot of schools on Long Island doing tremendous work, and there are also a lot of schools still feeling that push back, whether it's from parents groups or administration," says Elisa Waters, Spanish teacher at Jericho Middle School and organizer of the forum. Waters runs the school's Gay-Straight Alliance.
Hudson Taylor, a former student wrestler, was the keynote speaker.
"There's a culture and a language in sports that is not inclusive and not that welcoming for people that look, act, dress a different way," says Taylor.
