Long Islanders in the LGBT community marched Sunday for transgender civil rights.

Marchers say they want transgender Long Island residents to have the same legal protections as everyone else.

They marched from the streets of Garden City to the steps outside of the Nassau County legislative building in Mineola calling on lawmakers to pass legislation to protect transgender people from discrimination.

They say that for years, the Republican-led Nassau County Legislature has refused to bring an amendment to the county's human rights law up for a vote. The GOP-controlled state Senate has also refused to consider a similar proposal in Albany as well.

Nassau Democrats say if they gain the majority of the Legislature in the fall, they will bring this measure up for a vote.

News 12 reached out to state Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan's office for comment, but did not hear back.

The Long Island Transgender Advocacy Coalition is planning a similar march on Sen. Flanagan's office later this month.
