Residents in Selden are outraged that they were not notified about a Level 3 sex offender moving near a school and a park in their community.
"We're dealing with a very dangerous person that is living across the street from us," says Michelle Stinsman, a parent on Fairline Drive. "That's way too close for comfort."
Jae Claassen, 26, was convicted of sexual abuse in the first degree in 2008. The victim was an 11-year-old girl.
Claassen is currently renting a room inside a home on Fairlane Drive, which is walking distance to Newfield High School and a local park. Residents say Claassen has not registered his new address with Suffolk police, which is required by law.
They say their children were trick-or-treating at Claassen's house on Halloween.
Residents told News 12 Long Island that they were not notified by police or the local school that a registered sex offender had moved in. News 12 called the Middle Country School District for a response, but the district did not address the parents' claims about a lack of notification.
Claassen's landlord told News 12 that her tenant is not a danger to the community.
"If this gentleman was any threat at all, I would never have in my home," says Annette DeFalco, the landlord. "But he's not. He knows he made a mistake and, every time you talk to him about it, all you see is sorrow in this man's face. And everybody deserves a second chance."
But DeFalco says she was unaware that Claassen had apparently violated terms of his probation by being present in a house that accepted trick-or-treaters.
