Calls are being made in North Hempstead to reverse the merger of two police precincts in the wake of recent terror attacks and a shooting at the Roosevelt Field mall.
Those incidents are among the reasons why North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth is asking the Nassau County Legislature to reverse the consolidation of the Sixth Precinct in Manhasset.
The measure was passed in 2012 and saw the merging of the Sixth Precinct with the larger Third Precinct in Williston Park, freeing up one of the buildings for use by the highway patrol.
"Many of us moved into our homes in the 10th Legislative District for the wonderful quality of life we are afforded," Bosworth wrote in a letter to legislators. "If we feel that our safety is compromised or that our local precinct is not responsive to community needs, that quality of life is diminished."
Acting Nassau County Police Commissioner Tom Krumpter brushed off the concerns about public safety, saying there's been no change in how officers patrol their respective communities, and that changes in the back office of the department have no effect on the public.
The Nassau County Legislature approved the merger as a way to save $20 million a year.
