The legal trouble for Taco Bell began when the first lawsuit over the E. coli outbreak was filed in Suffolk court Thursday.
A lawsuit was filed on behalf of 11-year-old Tyler Vormittag. Vormittag's attorney claims the boy contracted E. coli bacteria from a Taco Bell restaurant in Riverhead. He says the intense pain necessitated the use of morphine. Vormittag has returned to school, but his attorney says it is unknown if his client will make a full recovery.
Also on Thursday, Nassau County Health Department officials confirmed the number of E. coli cases related to the county's Taco Bells rose to 54. They say they receive about 200 calls per day from people reporting symptoms. Taco Bell pulled green onions, or scallions, from their menus, but tests have yet to conclusively determine if that item is the only source. With two additional locations ordered shut down for decontamination Wednesday, Nassau health officials believe few new cases should arise.
Reports of E. coli have arisen in the New York metropolitan area, as well as Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
