Legal Aid Society claims brutality in New York City jails at an all-time high
It says despite oversight by a federal monitor for the past eight years at Rikers Island, unconstitutional excessive force continues to be used inside of the jails.

The Legal Aid Society is calling on the city’s Department of Correction and city officials to fix the brutality taking place in city jails.
It says despite oversight by a federal monitor for the past eight years at Rikers Island, unconstitutional excessive force continues to be used inside of the jails.
The nonprofit has now filed a motion with the court to hold the city in contempt and appoint an independent receiver. The receiver would have the power to ensure the DOC is complying with orders to reduce violence and unlawful conditions for incarcerated people.
The Legal Aid Society says the city has until mid-January to respond to the motion
