Long Island motorists say they're puzzled by new flashing yellow left-turn arrows.

The state Department of Transportation says it has installed flashing yellow arrows at 11 locations in Nassau and Suffolk counties. It comes after a Federal Highway Administration study claimed that the flashing arrows made intersections safer.

But critics say the state did not do nearly enough to educate Long Islanders on what the arrows mean. News 12 witnessed drivers confused, entering intersections, and then backing up fearing the flashing light might turn red and cameras might leave them open to a ticket.

"I think it makes sense to have a public education campaign," says Alec Slatky, of AAA.

The new signals are soon being introduced at dozens of more intersections. AAA says it's yet to be proven whether they will promote safety.
