The attorney for two dissident Democrats who were at the center of a power struggle in the Nassau Legislature is suing the county for payment.
Fred Brewington represented Roger Corbin (D-Westbury) and Lisanne Altmann (D-Great Neck), who crossed party lines in an effort to oust Presiding Officer Judy Jacobs last winter. Brewington says all but one of the other attorneys in the incident has been paid, but the county is refusing to honor his written contract. He is suing the county for more than $100,000 in legal fees and damages.
The county attorney?s office issued a statement saying it has processed Brewington?s contract and that he will be paid as soon as the Legislature approves it. That approval, however, may not materialize. A lawyer for Nassau says the county pays legal fees when a lawmaker defends his or her self, not when the lawmaker is the one filing suit.
