The Lawrence School District's decision to cancel the winter and fall sports season is rippling through the Inwood community.
The first of the delayed seasons was supposed to start Jan. 4.
But in the fallout of the decision, some coaches accused the school board of doing it to save money.
The Lawrence HS Coaches Alliance released a statement saying, "The official reason given was the COVID-19 pandemic and general safety concerns. There is very little evidence to support that claim. The Lawrence Public Schools continue to have very low infection rates even as cases soar in surrounding communities."
Itcontinues on to say, "It is difficult to believe that this is about the health and safety of the students when you realize, by cutting sports for the year, there are significant financial savings for the district to be had. This decision was not based on science, safety, or the best interest of students."
The choice has been understandably tough on the district's athletes.
"As I got the news right I started crying, this is really my life. It's really something important in my life. To have it taken away from me, it's really crazy," says basketball player Mikell Henry.
