A lifeguard shortage across Long Island may make it hard for some people to enjoy their last summer weekend near the water.
Most lifeguards are students and teachers. Because Labor Day is a week later than usual, many are going back to class before the holiday.
Deputy Regional Parks Director George Gorman says state parks like Jones Beach are still open, but the West Bathhouse Pool will be shut down until Saturday because of the lifeguard shortage.
"It was a lot of stress and drama to figure out the least impact to the park visitors but also have enough staff to provide adequate water safety," says Gorman.
A list of pool and beach schedules can be found online.
