The FBI is investigating after someone pointed a laser at the cockpit of two different aircraft last night near Brookhaven Calabro Airport. Officials say that Sun Country Flight 8800 from Iceland was heading to JFK when it reported being hit with a green laser while at 12,000 feet at around 8:30 p.m. The pilots of the plane reported the incident to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).A Suffolk Country police helicopter that went to investigate the incident was also hit by a laser. At least two officers and a medic were sent to the hospital. Investigators and K-9 units canvassed the area around William Floyd Parkway and Flower Hill Road in Shirley, but no arrests were made. The FAA says nearly 3,600 laser light incidents over the last year and say it is a growing threat to safety.
The incident is a punishable offense that carries up to five years in prison and a fine. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates laser pointers and has limited the strength of commonly sold pointers to 5 milliwatts. But Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) is urging the FDA to revamp its regulations and enact greater controls over devices that could inhibit pilots.
