Police say Yeymi Sanchez-Guzman hit and killed Randolph King with her Jeep and took off.
"My son is dead," said Randy King, the victim's father.
According to police, a passerby saw a body and car parts in the street shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday on College Road near the Fairfield at Selden apartments.
Sanchez-Guzman was arrested and taken to court to face a judge.
Police say her Jeep had a damaged front-end and windshield.
In court, prosecutors said Sanchez-Guzman was driving with only a learner's permit. They say she took off after allegedly hitting King with her car, and then went back to the scene two and half hours later.
Court papers show Sanchez-Guzman told police, "Some person on their phone came out of nowhere into the roadway. I tried stopping and turning but it was too late. I hit the person. I got really scared and didn't know what to do. I drove home."
Prosecutors say she returned to the scene after talking to family.
King's father says his son was a hard-working electrician.
"My son was a workaholic. All he did was work. He worked at Jake's 58 for New York state fixing the gambling machines," he said.
Sanchez-Guzman is charged with leaving the scene of an accident injury resulting in death.
A judge set bail at $25,000 cash.
Prosecutors say if found guilty, Sanchez-Guzman faces seven years in jail.
