A stowaway kitten under the hood of a car survived a drive from Port Jefferson to Riverhead.
The unnamed car owner was driving a 90-mile roundtrip to East Hampton and began hearing very loud meowing. He pulled over at Apple Honda in Riverhead for help.
“He was stuck down in between the radiator and the bumper,” says Apple Honda technician Matt Urbanowiecz.
Urbanowiecz and his colleagues were able to free the cat. They declined money from the car owner, happy to give the 5-week-old cat a new chance at life.
The crew at Apple Honda put the car back together, and then it was off to Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton. Director Pam Green gave the smokey-eyed cat the name Honda, and Honda received a thorough veterinary examination.
“This was definitely an unusual rescue,” laughs Green.
Kent tried to trace the original owner of the kitten, but no one has come forward so far. Honda is available for adoption, along with other dogs and cats, at Kent Animal Shelter.
