Kings Park 6th-grader struck by SUV while crossing street for bus
A 10-year-old boy was struck this morning by a driver who allegedly blew past a stopped school bus.
Ian Palencia-Mendoza is in the hospital recovering after being struck by an SUV while trying to get on his school bus in Kings Park. The boy’s older sister says he was at the bus stop and crossing busy First Avenue near Carlson Avenue when he was struck.
Police confirm the bus’s stop sign was out and lights were flashing when the sixth-grader was hit.
Police airlifted him to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was treated for a broken femur. He was expected to undergo surgery Friday night.
The SUV driver was identified as 81-year-old Pasquale Izzo. It’s unclear whether he's facing any charges. Police impounded the SUV.
Some parents say they've been complaining for years about how dangerous this bus stop is. The Kings Park superintendent issued a statement that said, “Effective immediately, the bus has been rerouted in an effort to try to reduce any potential future tragic accidents at this location."
