A farmer in Cutchogue is battling with KeySpan over claims that a gas leak ruined his crop of grapes.
David Mudd, from Mudd Vineyards, says a leak from a KeySpan gas line under the road killed approximately 90 grapevines. Mudd says he hired workers to plant new vines, but it takes three years before vines are old enough to produce grapes for wine. A KeySpan spokesperson acknowledges that there were two leaks in May of 2005 and July of 2006.
Mudd says he still has property elsewhere, but the problem has prohibited him from leasing the land. Mudd says he submitted a claim to KeySpan for $11,000 for his losses. He says he so far has been offered only $5,000.
