Long Island Power Authority postponed a vote Thursday on the KeySpan-National Grid merger after KeySpan confirmed the existence of several additional contaminated sites.
LIPA Chairman Kevin Law delayed the vote. "Before taking action on this, I, like many others, have issues, have questions and I want them resolved," he said.
KeySpan and the state Department of Environmental Conservation, which oversees cleanup of these sites, said as many as two dozen former plants pose varying degrees of contamination threats. The former Long Island Lighting Company gas storage facility on the Peconic River was one of the locations revealed Thursday.
While KeySpan believes the areas mentioned Thursday pose a low risk of contamination, environmentalists say KeySpan doesn't know the extent of the damage and, therefore, shouldn't be reassuring the public of safety.
Critics claim the bill for cleaning up these old facilities could run up to the hundreds of millions of dollars.
